MEMO: June 18, 2008

Attention: North Carolina Fishermen

On Tuesday the North Carolina Senate passed Bill 1695. The Senate voted 47-0 in support of the following changes to the North Carolina Boat Trailering regulations.

SECTION 7. G.S. 20-116 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:

"20-116. Size of vehicles and loads.

(m) Notwithstanding subsection (a) of this section, a boat or boat trailer with an outside width of less than 120 inches may be towed without a permit. The towing of a boat or boat trailer less than 120 inches in width may take place on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays, and may take place at night so long as there is an operating light harness attached at the widest part of the combination. With a properly issued permit, the towing of a boat or boat trailer 120 inches or more in width may take place on any day of the week, including weekends and holidays, but shall not take place at night. The provisions of this subsection do not apply to the towing of a boat by or on behalf of a manufacturer or retailer of boats."
"

Also included in the changes was a change from the Class A license to a Class C license for recreational boat and vehicle with a GVW of up to 26,000 pounds and no one under 18 years old to pull a trailer.

The NC House Transportation Committee will vote on June 19th on Bill H2167 which will then go back to the House for their approval.

Keep writing and calling your congressmen in support of all these changes.
